Aragorn had expected Master Elrond to rage at his tidings, but instead he saw only sorrow in his countenance. Maybe rage would have been easier for Aragorn to bear rather than the mixture of love, sorrow, and resignation with which his announcement was greeted. Maybe the hard conditions that he imposed were meant as a manner of refusing his consent?
“Your daughter will be clothed in royal purple,” Aragorn said suddenly. He hardly knew from when the words came. Was it from foresight he was speaking? His heart soared.
