Boromir scowled as he picked up the sickle. “This isn’t fair!” he complained. “Why should we work during our holiday?”

Faramir shrugged. “I enjoy helping Uncle Imrahil with the harvest,” he said.

“I am a soldier and heir to the White Rod,” said Boromir. “It is demeaning to be expected to do farm labour. Why aren’t you angry too, Faramir?”

Faramir laughed. “When the war is over, Gondor will need farmers. As I am not born to rule, maybe I shall buy some land and farm it.”

Boromir shook his head. Much as he loved his brother, Faramir baffled him.

Faramir stood on the cliff top, his eyes following the skein of geese in their flight. Their mournful cries echoed his thoughts.
Summer had ended and it was time to return to the City, to return to the life of a soldier, to return to his father’s scornful gaze.

Faramir tried to cheer himself with thoughts of the glorious hues of the autumn leaves and the fresh feel in the morning breeze.

Why was he so loth to leave Dol Amroth? Did he suffer from sea longing or did he simply yearn to escape? Nevertheless, he would do his duty.
