July Teitho Contest

Eala Earendel engla beorhtast, Ofer middangeard monnum sended
(Hail Earendel, brightest of angels, over Middle-earth to men sent)
- Cynewulf: Crist

What is the moment when Middle-earth was born in Tolkien's mind? It could very well be the moment when he saw this verse from a Middle-English poem, describing the rising of the Evening Star. The spark of inspiration that became a Star of Hope... Let it be a spark of inspiration for some great stories and pictures for the July topic - Stars. Thanks to Silivren Tinu for the suggestion!

So in June, our topic was Languages, which were Tolkien's motivation for creating his fantastic world. In July, we would like to honour his inspiration: that moment when Earendel - the Evening Star from Crist, became Earendil with a Silmaril upon his brow, the Evening Star rising above Middle-earth and bringing hope.

O stars that in the Sunless Year / With shining hand by her were sown..., sing the Elves about Elbereth Gilthoniel, Varda the Starkindler. In preperation for their awaking, she filled the sky with her stars and put them into constellations: Menalvagor the heavely fighter, Wilwarin - the Butterfly and Valacirca - the Sickle of Valar, a warning for Melkor. Even the Dwarves sing about it in their song of Durin: He stooped and looked in Mirrormere,/ And saw a crown of stars appear,/ As gems upon a silver thread,/ Above the shadow of his head.

In your story or picture, a star or stars should play an important role. It could be a star that shows you the way home, a star that predicts doom (like comets in the Middle-ages, the Age of Stars, the constellations, Earendil, a Middle-earth version of the Star of Bethlehem, a star/constellation that reminds you of a loved one, memories connected to stars, stars that give a lost wanderer or prisoner hope... Just remember to include Aragorn and/or Legolas in your story. In a picture it's not a condition, but we would appreciate that as well.

The deadline for this challenge is July 25th.
