Blood staining the ground from men and horses; the screams and stench of battle, trampled earth beneath a lowering sky.
Sorrowful sights and sounds from that day haunted Faramir’s dreams.
Long years passed until he chanced that way again.
Sunlight and dappled shade. A fragrant breeze blowing from the west. Was this truly the place of so much slaughter?
The ground was scarlet still, not now with blood, though, but with bright poppies, their delicate heads swaying as if in a dance.
A great peace fell upon Faramir. Darkness had not endured. The brilliant blossoms sparkled; scarlet in the sun.
